Carstensz Pyramid: Oceania's Hidden Giant
Of the Seven Summits, Puncak Jaya, also known as Carstensz Pyramid, is the one most people have never heard of. At 4,884 metres, it's the lowest of the seven by height, sitting in the Sudirman Range on the island of New Guinea in Indonesia's Papua province. But height isn't the whole story. Despite being shorter than Everest, Aconcagua, or Denali, Carstensz carries the highest technical rating of any of the Seven Summits.

Carstensz Pyramid holds a strange distinction: the highest island peak on Earth, and the only one of the Seven Summits made of limestone rather than volcanic or granite rock. It even carries equatorial glaciers, rare ice fields sitting almost directly on the equator, though they've been retreating fast since the 1970s and are expected to disappear entirely within the decade. The mountain wasn't summited until 1962, when Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer led the expedition that succeeded where a 1936 Dutch attempt had failed.
The Summit Experience
There's no easy way in. Jungle trekking to base camp was abandoned years ago over safety concerns, so nearly every expedition now flies in by helicopter, weather and fuel supply permitting, to a base camp at 3,800 metres. From there, the standard route climbs a 600-metre wall of sharp, hard rock, crossing an overhanging section on a fixed steel cable known as the Tyrolean traverse. Summit day runs about 12 hours, through rain, mist, and wind that almost never lets up. There's no real climbing season here, just a narrow gap between one storm and the next.
